The present Human Kinetics and Health Education programme in the University was established in the year 1987. Initially, the programme was labeled Health and Physical Education (HPE) with most of the courses basically health oriented. A comprehensive review was carried out and got the approval of the University Senate in 2002. The dynamics of change as witnessed in the profession world-wide necessitated the current change in nomenclature and the current review carried out in the programme and the courses. Thus, the review took care of emerging areas in Physical Education (now Human Kinetics Education) aspect, to fall in line with the spirit of National Policy on Education as well as NUC directives. The review as a matter of necessity accredited two units to most of the courses and three units to most of the practical and skills related ones as well as Faculty-wide course. It also ensure that the new (revised) Human Kinetics and Health Education programmes compete favorably with similar programmes as offered by other Universities in Nigeria and elsewhere. Additionally, the approval given by the senate of the University of Calabar for the transformation of the Physical and Health Education Unit into a full fledge autonomous Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education makes it mandatory to carry out the current review of programmes and courses.
