Department History

The Department of Science Education was approved by the University Senate at its 200th meeting held on the 13th of November, 2014 due to the unwieldy nature of the mother department that posse monumental challenges in administration and recommendation of the N.U.C accreditation panel. At this meeting, four new departments: Education Arts, Education Science, Education Social Sciuences, Environmental Education were created from the former Department of Curriculum and Teaching, while this mother Department of Curriculum and Teaching retained its name. The Department of Science Education is currently offering four programmes: Mathematics Education, Physics Education, Chemistry Education and Biology Education. Each of these four programmes has an Academic Adviser who is also the examination officer. The foundation Head of Department is Dr. (Mrs) Cecilia Olunwa Ekwueme who is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education.

Currently, the Department has academic staff strength of 15, comprising three Professors, one Associate Professor, two senior lecturers, one lecturer I, three lecturer II, three Assistant lecturers and two Graduate assistants. Its also has six Administration/secretarial staff.

The Department is running only a regular programme in Mathematics Education, Physics Education, Chemistry Education and Biology Education, though it runs service courses for sandwich programmes and other departments that take elective courses in the department.
